Our Earlsfield Anniversary

Cake & Yoga Club came to life in the summer of 2019. Many joyous afternoons fuelled by feel good yoga practices cake and bubbles in our birth place, Highbury Fields. A turbulent journey followed as we stepped into 2020 and you know who entered the scene. With many twists and turns, we eventually settled in Earlsfield. After years of online yoga, it was time for a new chapter.

After stumbling upon what would become our first home at Earlsfield Primary School, fairy lights were ordered along with essential oil diffusers, mugs, plenty of mats, blocks, straps and bolsters to create our very own pop-up club. Our first ever session was on the 9th September 2021. Nobody showed up.

It was tough. As a yoga teacher, and especially when you own a small business - my entire heart and soul is poured into all I do for CAYC. Weeks passed by and it was either just me on my tod or a couple wonderful souls would come along to class. There were many occasions I was certain I’d have to give up (my mum even got me a ‘keep going’ badge that still sits on my bedside table!) Keep going. Simple but such essential advice.

My passion for Cake & Yoga Club and the reason why I started is what fuelled me. We need community, we need to feel welcome, warm and encouraged to explore this beautiful practice, we need to tear down expectations and toxic conversations in the wellness industry. Cake & Yoga Club means everything, and so I had to be the most loyal cheerleader.

I walked the streets for hours on end flyering in the rain, stood outside Earlsfield train station every week passing flyers to commuters with a whole range of reactions, went door to door, roped my wonderfully supportive friends in to stand on each street corner on busy Saturday afternoons - it was absolutely exhausting but it was also joyous.

Over time, more humans began to come along to class. We would soak up the cosiness of the hall with mat-side chai lattes, baked goods, new friends. Our small community began (and continues) to flourish.

The most important lesson I have learnt is to find joy in the journey. We so often dream about the future, forgetting to relish what we have right now. Seeking celebration in the graft, in the school hall turned yoga studio, rough around the edges, beautiful as it is. One day we may land in a permanent space - but for now let’s soak up this moments in-between.

Thank you for being part of our journey, it means the world and we can’t wait to see what’s next! Here’s to another year of cake, yoga and good times.
